Green Home Grant

The government has introduced a £2 billion Green Homes Grant, providing at least £2 for every £1 homeowners and landlords spend to make their homes more energy efficient, up to £5,000 per household. For those on the lowest incomes, the scheme will fully fund energy efficiency measures of up to £10,000 per household. In total this could support over 100,000 green jobs and help strengthen a supply chain that will be vital for meeting our target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The scheme aims to upgrade over 600,000 homes across England, saving households hundreds of pounds per year on their energy bills.

The work must be carried out by companies registered with the TrustMark scheme, or with MCS for renewable technologies. The TrustMark scheme will guarantee that building work is completed to a high standard by accredited tradespeople, ensuring consumers are fully protected. TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme covering work a consumer chooses to have carried out on their home.

The Green Homes Grants will give homeowners, including owner occupiers and social/private landlords, vouchers to install one or more of the following.

  • Solid wall, under-floor, cavity wall, loft, flat roof, room in roof and park home insulation
  • Air source or ground source heat pump
  • Solar thermal
  • Biomass pellet boilers

In addition, households can use their voucher for further energy saving measures. These include one or more of the following.

  • Draught proofing
  • Double or triple glazing, when replacing single glazing
  • Secondary glazing, in addition to single glazing
  • Energy efficient replacement doors
  • Hot water tank thermostat
  • Hot water tank insulation
  • Heating controls, smart heating controls, zone controls, intelligent delayed start thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves

Homeowners across England will be able to access advice and support on improving the energy efficiency of their homes from the Simple Energy Advice (SEA) service. SEA will suggest appropriate home improvements that homeowners may be able to apply for support in funding. Once the works are agreed, vouchers will start to be issued from the end of September so work can commence.
