Internal Wall Insulation

Internal wall insulation is the application of insulation to the interior face of external walls in order to improve the thermal performance of the property, which helps to keep the heat in during the winter and helps to keep the heat out during the summer. Internal wall insulation can be installed using a variety of materials, including foam boards, mineral wool, and rigid foam.

The installation process typically involves removing the existing plaster or drywall, applying the insulation material, and then reinstalling the wall covering. Other methods include over boarding the existing sub-structure, and all installations are completed to manufacturers guidelines.

LISTED BELOW ARE SOME OF THE PRO’S AND CON’S RELATING TO INTERNAL WALL INSULATION

  • Is generally cheaper to install than external wall insulation.
  • Will slightly reduce the floor area of any rooms in which it is applied (the thickness of the insulation is around 100mm).
  • Can be completed room by room to avoid major disruption.
  • Requires skirting boards, door frames and external fittings such as radiators and switches to be removed and reattached.
  • Can make it harder to fix heavy items to inside walls – although special fixings are available.
  • Needs any problems with penetrating or rising damp to be fixed first.
  • Particularly appropriate where you need to maintain the external appearance of the building.
